Oxygen Monitoring & Furnace Atmosphere Guide

Southland Sensing oxygen analyzers provide continuous oxygen measurement for heat treating, bright annealing, carburizing, carbonitriding, brazing, sintering, vacuum furnace backfill, and controlled atmosphere furnaces. Our analyzers help manufacturers verify furnace atmosphere integrity, detect air ingress, prevent oxidation and decarburization, and consistently produce high-quality metal components.

概要

Controlled atmosphere heat treating relies on precise oxygen measurement to produce consistent metallurgical properties and high-quality surface finishes. Whether processing carbon steel, stainless steel, tool steel, nickel alloys, titanium, or powder metal components, even small amounts of oxygen entering the furnace atmosphere can cause oxidation, decarburization, scaling, discoloration, and reduced product quality.

Modern heat treating operations use nitrogen, argon, hydrogen, endothermic gas, dissociated ammonia, vacuum systems, or other protective atmospheres to prevent unwanted oxidation while achieving the desired mechanical properties. Continuous oxygen monitoring verifies atmosphere integrity, detects air ingress, confirms purge effectiveness, and helps maintain consistent furnace performance throughout every stage of the thermal process.

This application note examines the major heat treating processes—including carburizing, bright annealing, sintering, brazing, vacuum furnace backfill, and inert gas purging—and explains where oxygen analyzers are installed and which Southland Sensing analyzers are best suited for each application.

よくある質問

Yes. Our electrochemical sensors are designed and tested for use in inert gas backgrounds, from below 1 part-per-million oxygen up to percent-level concentrations. Nitrogen and argon do not interfere with the electrochemical oxygen measurement.

Most of our process analyzers measure below 1000 parts-per-million but can also cover the 0–1% or 0–25% O₂ range depending on the furnace type and process requirement. Please contact our sales team to discuss suitable options.

Yes. The OMD-625 carries ATEX and IECEx certification, making it suitable for monitoring furnace exhaust streams and other hazardous-area points where flammable carrier gases such as hydrogen or endothermic gas are present.

Sensor life is typically 24 – 60 months under most industrial heat treating conditions, however specific furnace temperatures and duty cycles can affect sensor life. We recommend an annual sensor audit and keeping one spare per analyzer for unplanned replacements. Swap-out is tool-free and takes under a few minutes.

Yes. Several models support Modbus RTU or MODBUS ASCII bi-directional digital protocols, allowing direct integration with furnace control or SCADA systems. Contact us to confirm which models match your site’s requirements.

You can refer to our O₂センサー適合ガイド to confirm the correct sensor model based on your specific gas application and analyzer requirements.

Reliable oxygen monitoring is not optional in metals and thermal processing — it protects **part quality confirms atmosphere integrity ensures **process consistency and keeps personnel safe. Southland Sensing offers a complete range of instruments for every point in the heat treating process.
