Automotive Exhaust Gas & Combustion Analysis

Oxygen Monitoring & Emissions Testing Guide

Southland Sensing oxygen analyzers provide accurate exhaust oxygen measurement for automotive engine development, emissions testing, combustion analysis, dynamometer testing, engine diagnostics, and catalyst performance verification. Our analyzers help engineers optimize air-fuel ratio, improve combustion efficiency, reduce emissions, and validate engine performance.

Огляд

Internal combustion engine performance depends on maintaining the proper air-fuel ratio throughout every operating condition. Measuring residual oxygen in the exhaust provides valuable insight into combustion efficiency, fuel mixture, catalyst performance, and overall engine health. Combined with measurements of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, oxygen analysis helps engineers optimize combustion, improve fuel economy, reduce emissions, and diagnose engine performance issues. Oxygen measurement is also widely used in emissions laboratories, dynamometer facilities, engine development programs, and inspection stations to verify regulatory compliance and support engine calibration.

Common Exhaust Gas Analysis Applications:

  • Engine Development & R&D
  • Chassis & Engine Dynamometers
  • Emissions Certification
  • Smog Inspection Stations
  • Catalyst Performance Testing
  • Engine Diagnostics & Tuning
  • Small Engine Testing
  • Generator & Industrial Engine Testing

Residual oxygen concentration in the exhaust stream is a direct indicator of air-fuel ratio and combustion completeness. Excess oxygen indicates a lean-running condition, while near-zero oxygen in the exhaust alongside high CO or HC typically indicates rich operation. Monitoring oxygen across the catalyst inlet and outlet also gives a direct indication of catalyst efficiency and light-off behavior during cold-start and warm-up test cycles.

Our electrochemical oxygen sensors are designed for conditioned gas samples and are not intended for direct insertion into hot, unconditioned exhaust streams. A sample conditioning system that reduces temperature, removes condensate and particulates, and controls flow is required upstream of the analyzer. Please contact our applications team to discuss sample conditioning requirements for your specific exhaust gas conditions.

Yes. Both the OMD-480 portable and the OMD-150 wall mount analyzer are well suited for spot checking and continuous monitoring of oxygen in stationary combustion engine and generator exhaust streams for emissions compliance and combustion efficiency purposes.

Yes. Several models support Modbus RTU or MODBUS ASCII bi-directional digital protocols, allowing direct integration with test cell data acquisition and control systems. Contact us to confirm which models match your system’s communication requirements.
