Tener acceso a ox\u00edgeno y nitr\u00f3geno de alta pureza es importante para muchas industrias. A menudo, una opci\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica para que las plantas m\u00e1s peque\u00f1as obtengan este gas es generarlo a partir del aire que nos rodea in situ utilizando un generador de adsorci\u00f3n por cambio de presi\u00f3n (PSA). Los generadores PSA pueden variar desde peque\u00f1os paquetes que caben en un pat\u00edn hasta instalaciones excepcionalmente grandes. Los generadores PSA aprovechan el hecho de que, bajo alta presi\u00f3n, ciertos gases tienden a adsorberse, o adherirse, a determinados materiales. Por ejemplo: para generar ox\u00edgeno, se comprime el aire y se hace pasar por zeolita, que adsorbe el nitr\u00f3geno y deja un aire m\u00e1s saturado de ox\u00edgeno. Cuando la zeolita est\u00e1 completamente saturada, se reduce la presi\u00f3n para desorber, o separar, el nitr\u00f3geno de la zeolita para que pueda ventilarse. Para generar nitr\u00f3geno, se utiliza un tamiz de carb\u00f3n en lugar de zeolita. Los generadores PSA al vac\u00edo (VPSA) funcionan de manera inherentemente similar, pero utilizan sopladores de vac\u00edo para reducir la presi\u00f3n de desorci\u00f3n y mejorar la cantidad de gas residual expulsado.<\/p>

La detecci\u00f3n de ox\u00edgeno es fundamental para el funcionamiento de los generadores (V)PSA, ya que es necesario saber si el gas que se produce tiene la calidad deseada.
